Engineering Physicist II

We Are: Fermilab is America's premier laboratory for particle physics and accelerator research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. We support discovery science experiments in Illinois and South Dakota and at locations around the world, including Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, and the South Pole. We are strategic risk takers, innovators, and collaborators. We are engineers, scientists, technicians, administrative professionals. We are 1,800 employees advancing knowledge for the benefit of humankind. Fermilab has been at the forefront of particle physics for more than 40 years. We build world-leading accelerators and detectors to conduct some of the most advanced particle physics experiments possible. We collect and analyze the data from those experiments with some of the most powerful computers in the world. Fermilab's Technical Division/Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) department is seeking a highly motivated Engineering Physicist II. The selected candidate will participate in the tasks of designing and constructing SRF cryomodules, which are major building blocks for linear accelerators Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS-II) and Proton Improvement Plan (PIP) II. You Will Work in the Resonance Control Group to address all aspects related to the control of the SRF cavities resonance, which are important tasks for future SRF Linacs. Develop and test the electromechanical system to tune cavity to resonance and systems to actively control the SRF cavities for ongoing and future projects at Fermilab. Design and develop equipment or sub-systems, including specification of components and performance verification requirements. Operate facilities or complex equipment to perform data collection and tests. Monitor tests and examine operations of facilities to isolate and define problems with proper functioning of equipment and to insure efficient functioning and conformance with Safety specifications and regulations. Develop plans to monitor the operation and maintenance of equipment used in advanced physics measurements or detector development at the sub-system level, detecting trends and debugging equipment. Plan and assist in inquiries to discover facts or to test hypotheses concerning the equipment or system in assigned area. Evaluate findings and develop plans and improvements to meet project or operation goals that bring a project to operating status. Detect irregularities of a system through a complete understanding of a system and its subsystems. Interact with other specialists to coordinate the modification and repair of the system and to propose new, improved or upgraded systems. Select and apply appropriate engineering standards to meet assignment objectives. Determine vendors and technologies for performance evaluation. Determine measurements/tests needed to evaluate system performance. Implement modest changes in scope as required according to predefined change control procedures based on analytical results. Respect, understand, and value individual differences that embody the principles of diversity. Abide by all environment, safety, and health regulations.                           We Are Looking For Master's Degree or PhD in Physics or Electrical Engineering with 5+ years' relevant experienced strongly preferred Knowledge of Radio Frequency equipment, designing/operating a Data Acquisition system, and control system engineering Experience with a programming language such as MATLAB, LABVIEW, and VHDL Knowledge of SRF cavity testing is preferred Experience with electronics design, vibration instrumentation and robotics engineering is preferred
